Today I had a pleasant viewing of a property in Bergen with Pascal van Aalst from Duynstreek Makelaars. You immediately noticed that this realtor has a professional attitude; he was well informed about all the information regarding the property and also knew a lot about the area. Broker Pascal neatly fulfills the bingo card of prejudices that people have about brokers. Just a little too friendly, just a little too arrogant and condescending when he doesn't get his way, in short, a terrible attitude. We wanted to make an appointment to view a house on Korfwaterweg in Petten. A house with an asking price of over 1.3 million euros. Preferably on Saturday if that was possible. And yes, how nice, that was possible but only at 10 am ‘‘s morning. That suited Pascal best because then he could nicely combine the appointment with other viewers on the same day. I did understand that, but 10 am wasn't possible for us. ‘Can’t you leave home a little earlier?’ asked Pascal somewhat elevated. No, unfortunately not, but no problem for us, then I will check our agenda to see if we can view together at another time and I will get back to you later on that. Pascal suddenly seemed to want to schedule an appointment with us in his agenda so asked me for our details. Phone number, of course. Email address, agreed. No problem. But also our current postcode and house number. Sorry, what are the postcode and house number needed for? Immediately the atmosphere changed, according to Pascal no one had any problems providing those details and why would I not give them, what did I have to hide? Then Pascal began a condescending sermon in which he told me that he deals in houses in the exclusive segment where his clients have expensive art on the wall. He likes to know who he is showing around. I understand that perfectly well, but it still doesn't give him the right to expect, even demand, that I provide him with our current postcode and house number in a condescending tone. A few minutes after our conversation, I called Pascal back and told him that the phone call had not pleased me at all and that we are moving on. Pascal reminded me of a car salesman a few years ago. That good man had a new model electric car for sale and when asking for a test drive he sneered that test drives were only for customers. He assessed my income and financial position based on his prejudice about young people, just as broker Pascal also wanted to assess our position, among other things, based on our current postcode and house number. Perhaps it is normal for Pascal that potential buyers completely bend to the wishes of the selling broker, but today he had the wrong person. I don’t need to buy his offer, nor do I need to accept his attitude. Also, I don't think I ever knickered with Pascal before; the friendly behavior with the use of my first name in every sentence can also be omitted. The sellers of this property have missed a potential buyer and bidder today, purely due to the attitude of their broker. Update 26-06-2026; Broker Pascal seems to think it’s chic to emphasize my last name in his response. It shows that discretion is foreign to Pascal, discretion is something you would expect in the exclusive segment. @Pascal, don't worry, I'm not bothered by it, your potential clients or customers might be. The hole you have dug is only getting deeper.

It's a small office with good personal service. Viewings are always conducted by the same person who knows the house well. Always easily accessible both by phone and via WhatsApp. No 9:00 to 5:00 mentality.

I would describe their motto as: say what you do and do what you say. Andries and Irene are good sparring partners regarding the constantly changing rental market. Therefore, I want to express my compliments to the entire team for the pleasant cooperation.

Last year I collaborated with Mensen in Beweging when I was looking to purchase my first home. Unfortunately, my experience was far from good and ended on a very unpleasant note: I hired Irene Timmerman as my real estate agent for a fee that was higher than the standard rate in Amsterdam, because she claimed to offer an end-to-end service. Throughout the entire period, I observed a lack of proactivity on her part when searching and sharing properties. Her approach lacked thoroughness, which ultimately led me to search for homes on Funda myself and share them with her to help schedule appointments, which often occurred just before the closing date. This created additional pressure in the decision-making process in an already competitive market. She also claimed to have an extensive network of real estate agents, but I quickly realized that this was not entirely the case, as her focus was more on rentals. Even her assessment of properties was taken from a rental perspective, rather than a purchase one. Because we made little progress over almost a year, I decided to terminate the contract. I gave her feedback and requested to part ways, as I was not satisfied with her services. Cancellation fees of € 1500 were involved in the contract, which I also learned was not common, since most real estate agents work on a 'no-cure-no-pay' basis. When I asked to meet personally to share my feedback, she also refused to come to Amsterdam because, according to her, “the gas price was too high.” She also called me ‘insecure’ and emotional about my search criteria, the criteria she adhered to at the start of our contract. She threatened collection measures if the fee were not paid within two weeks. This has been an extremely unpleasant experience and in comparison to the Real Estate Agent with whom I collaborated afterwards, I see the lack of expertise and professionalism of People on the Move. They may have a track record in rentals, but I would strongly advise against using them as an expat buying a home in Amsterdam.
