Our daughter and son-in-law seriously intended to make an offer on a house they really wanted to buy. The seller verbally agreed through the real estate agent, which led us – as parents – to confidently assume that the house would be granted to them. To our surprise, it turned out that the house was sold to a higher bid after all. Although this is legally possible as long as no deed of sale has been signed, we find it morally wrong to first make a commitment and then switch to a higher bidder. In a time when young people already have a hard time in the housing market, real estate agents – especially as intermediaries – should pay more attention to transparency, careful communication and safeguarding integrity within the sales process. Trust and morality belong just as much to a successful home transaction as signatures and contracts. That line was unfortunately not respected in this case.

I withdrew my sales mandate (three weeks on Funda, they didn't have to take photos themselves or conduct viewings) and they still managed to charge commission above the withdrawal costs despite my protests. In the end, I still had to pay the full amount of €850,-. Really sad, it puts real estate agents in a bad light again!!
