After my divorce, I decided together with my ex-partner to sell our house. Due to the circumstances, I had to sleep at friends' places for no less than 8 months with my then 4-month-old daughter. When we finally reached an agreement on the sale, I made an appointment with Van de Zande. They would sell my ready-to-live-in home in exchange for their help in finding an apartment with 2 bedrooms – one for me and one for my daughter. Because there was no suitable apartment available at that time, I agreed to an apartment with 1 bedroom on Irenestraat 2a, with the promise that they would give me priority later for a home with 2 bedrooms. The sale itself went well; the contact with real estate agent Martijn was pleasant and communication lines were short – logical, because at that time it was naturally about selling my house. But then the misery began. While I had been living in the apartment for 10 months, the apartment next to mine (with 2 bedrooms) became available. I immediately emailed to see if I could move in, but that wasn't allowed because I had only lived there for 10 months instead of the agreed 12 months. When the apartment later became vacant again – and I had been renting it for longer than 12 months – I contacted them again. But this time I was told that there was already another interested party. Meanwhile, during that time, I never received any help or housing proposals, and if I responded to a property myself, I had to arrange everything myself. It always got stuck on the income requirement, while as a single mother with 22 working hours, I simply cannot meet it, because only gross income is looked at. After many frustrated phone calls, I eventually received a home referral in Kaatsheuvel. This house was not only more expensive, but also so dirty and run-down that I could never agree to it. Then I was suddenly told that I could rent the apartment on Irenestraat 2b, provided the other interested party would decline. When I finally received the relieving phone call that I could rent the apartment, the familiar sentence came: “Then we will now see if you meet the income requirements.” And yes – there it went wrong again. While I now also do not meet the income requirement of my current apartment, where I am simply paying the rent properly. The apartment next to mine is only € more expensive, but even then they are making things difficult. My feeling? As soon as the sale of my house was finalized and the commission was received, I was left to my own devices. Agreements are repeatedly not kept, and when you call, you mainly notice irritation instead of understanding or help. Very unfortunate. I feel unheard and am now investigating whether the rental committee can help me further.
