Attention for expats, Scam Alert: they are okay, until your contract expires. When your rental agreement expires, there is a risk that your deposit will not be refunded without a valid reason. After ending my rental agreement, I experienced problems getting my deposit back. Even after 14 months, this has not been resolved. They tried to withhold € 1.500, citing a fine of € 1.000 for insufficient toilet cleaning and another € 500 for heating costs, all without providing any evidence. While I resolved the cleaning issue, they insisted that I wait a year for a solution regarding the heating costs (when they would receive the heating balance). After a year, they received the heating balance and told me I had a negative balance (I had to pay about € 200 extra, but since they didn't call me, I should be grateful). I requested to check the bill and after calculation, I am supposed to get back € 400,-. However, after sharing my statement, they changed the story and claimed that as the last resident of the apartment, I am responsible for the entire year’s heating bill (without proof). I left the apartment in August. When I pointed out a clause in the contract stating that I was not liable for the bill, they stated that the apartment was no longer their responsibility and advised me to contact the owner directly. I have had no communication with the owner and do not even know their identity. This situation feels like a farce. Since last week, I am waiting for the owner to contact me, but she has not called back. Ps: They received the invoice 15 days before my email.
